AFRICAN VOLUNTARY ORGANISATION
The African Voluntary Organisation (AVO) in Mpigi l was established in 1998 to provide overseas volunteers the opportunity to serve at-risk and disadvantaged youth and to give them a chance to experience Uganda. The AVO has since expanded and now has volunteers in Kampala (45 minutes outside of Kampala), and Mpigi a wilderness training camp. Between the three centres the AVO can accommodate 18 volunteers at any one time. The AVO provides volunteer opportunities and accommodation for overseas volunteers. Most of the volunteers work in programs run by), although some work in other local social service organizations. The volunteers work within established programs along side local staff, interns, and at times other volunteers. Currently we have volunteers working in shelters for homeless youth, running programs at the local YMCA, facilitating leadership camps with school groups, working with youth who are living on the streets, leading classes and groups on youth issues with students, running workshops on HIV/AIDS, and coordinating a variety of programs in schools.
We encourage diversity at the AVO We do not put any requirements on age, spiritual beliefs, or education on our volunteers, as we believe that we learn and grow when we are around people who are different than ourselves. We are looking for volunteers that enjoy working with youth, are willing to challenge themselves, and are open to new experiences.
This site has been set up to give you information about the AVO and assist you as you make a decision as to whether this program is one in which you would like to serve. If you have any questions or queries not covered by this site, please contact the African Voluntary Organisation

WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF MY AVO EXPERIENCE?
The answer to this question, of course, depends on how much you put in. If you enter fully into the work and make an effort to understand and make friends with the volunteers from many other cultures, you will have an interesting and enjoyable experience. You will make friends from countries all over the world, you will learn to do work you have never done before, you will learn important organizational and management skills, you will be introduced to a completely different part of the world, and you will learn about different cultures. More than all of this, you will have the satisfaction of having worked with others on a project to help a community in need.
